Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Recap: The Kree Fight Hive in Episode 19

By Amy Barton | May 4th, 2016

Welcome to the Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. recap for Season 3Episode 19, "Failed Experiment" (original airdate May 3, 2016) where you can catch up on the all of the highlights that you may have missed! Check out our favorite moments and let us know yours in the comments below!

Hive's (Brett Dalton) origin is revealed in the first moments of this week's episode, with an Ancient Mayan running for his life from the Kree Reapers. The Reapers catch the Mayan and perform a painful Terrigenesis experiment on him, thus creating Hive. Meanwhile, in the present, in the abandoned town where Hive has stationed himself and Daisy Johnson (Chloe Bennet), he tells the Followers that the same experiment that created him will be used on them. Dr. Holden Radcliffe (John Hannah) then reveals that the experiment is a "chemical cocktail," a one-two punch that will turn any human into a swayed Inhuman. They start the experiment on the Followers, which goes terribly wrong.

Watch the failed experiment:

Back at S.H.I.E.L.D. HQ, Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) continue work on an antitoxin to Hive's sway. Lincoln (Luke Mitchell) volunteers to be their guinea pig, but Coulson (Clark Gregg) refuses, saying it could backfire and kill him. Later, Lincoln goes against Coulson's orders and takes the antitoxin; electricity explodes and Lincoln starts to convulse. Simmons tries to give him a counter-agent, but Lincoln refuses it.

Mack (Henry Simmons) and May (Ming-Na Wen) ready a heavy-weapons team to the town and kill Hive. This may be their only opportunity to catch him by surprise. Once in Hive's town, they discover the Kree artifact fully assembled and emitting soundwaves that have called a Kree object from orbit. The Agents flee in time to see the object crash into the building and explode, witnessing the Kree Reapers emerge from the fiery wreckage.

Watch the return of the Kree Reapers:

The Kree Reapers make their way through the town, killing Alisha and then move on to Daisy and Hive. In her battle, Daisy uses her powers to break the Reaper's spine, allowing Dr. Radcliffe to drain the Kree blood, while Hive takes on another Reaper back at the Church.

Watch Hive battle its maker:

Mack finds Daisy and she tells him that she got caught on the security camera because she isn't thinking like a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent anymore, not because she wants to be rescued. Mack then disintegrates the Kree with a splinter bomb before enough blood is gathered. A furious Daisy turns on Mack and is about to quake his heart out of his chest when May fires a shot that takes Daisy out.

Back at S.H.I.E.L.D. HQ, the team discusses stopping Hive from getting his hands on any Kree blood; Mack admits to Coulson that he was right about Daisy; and Simmons tells Lincoln that the antitoxin didn't work and any hope they had for developing another one went up in electricity when he exploded the lab.

Meanwhile, Hive continues to question Daisy's loyalty after she failed to successfully capture Kree blood, until she reminds him that she has Kree blood in her veins and says he can drain her for the experiment.
